Protect every journey

What we do.

What makes us the same but different

At the British Transport Police, we share the core mission of keeping people safe, just like every other police force in the UK. But how we do that and where makes us stand out.

We are the only police force in the country with a national footprint, operating across England, Wales and Scotland. While territorial forces focus on a defined geographic area, BTP’s jurisdiction spans over 10,000 miles of railway track and more than 3,000 stations, platforms and transport hubs. Our officers also work across light rail networks, tram systems and other key parts of the national transport infrastructure.

BTP is uniquely positioned under the Department for Transport rather than the Home Office, and we are primarily funded by the rail industry, not directly from the public purse. This model gives us a distinct operational flexibility while still holding the same policing powers and responsibilities as other forces.

While our core responsibility is transport policing, our remit often extends into major national operations, high-profile public events and large-scale deployments across the UK. From supporting crowd safety and operational coordination to delivering visible reassurance in dynamic, high-pressure environments, our officers play a vital role in keeping people safe well beyond the railway.

In short, we bring national capability with a specialist focus, responding locally, regionally and nationally wherever our presence is needed.
