Why Transferee and Re-Joiner Recruitment is the Heart of What I Do at BTP

11/04/2025

Hi, I’m Emily Dunne and I’ve worked in recruitment at the British Transport Police for almost seven years. Over that time, I’ve had the opportunity to recruit into a wide variety of roles across crime investigation, specialist operations, finance, commercial and more.

In 2021, I took on something new; leading our Transferee and Re-Joiner recruitment portfolio. I was stepping into unfamiliar territory, having had little experience with recruiting externally for officer roles, but I quickly found my stride. Today, it’s a part of my role that I genuinely enjoy and value.

Why I Enjoy Transferee and Re-Joiner Recruitment

Simply put, I’m a people person.

There’s something incredibly rewarding about speaking directly with officers, learning about their career journeys, and helping them take their next step in policing.

As the daughter of a retired Police Officer, I’ve always felt connected to the world of policing. Growing up listening to my dad’s stories gave me an appreciation for the service, and now I get to speak with officers who are transferring from other forces or re-joining after a break. Every officer brings something unique, no matter their length of service or their time away from policing.

BTP Values Experience

Over recent years, BTP has placed an increased focus on transferee and re-joiner recruitment. While it remains vital that we develop new officers, we also recognise the importance of retaining experienced individuals who already understand the demands and responsibilities of policing.

These officers help strengthen our operational capability and bring diversity of thought, skill and experience to our teams — which ultimately helps us better serve the public and our rail communities.

What You Can Expect

The fundamental role of a Police Officer is consistent across all forces — protecting and serving the public. For that reason, transferring to BTP is often a smoother transition than many initially think.

However, as a specialist police force, BTP also presents new and unique challenges. You will receive full training to prepare for these, which may include understanding the types of crime we manage, our specific customer base, and the commercial environment we operate in. BTP is largely funded by train operating companies, so commercial awareness is a key part of what makes us unique.

Reasons to Join BTP

Something new and interesting - You’ll face new challenges, learn different skills, and work in an environment with a different set of priorities. This often reignites officers’ passion for policing.

Engagement and support - BTP is regularly described as having a “family feel.” Despite being a national force of around 5,000 employees, you’ll find real opportunities to connect across departments and build strong working relationships. Senior leaders are visible and accessible, and there’s a culture of openness and support.

Career development - Whether you’re interested in progression or specialisms like firearms, SRU, investigations or County Lines, BTP provides clear internal pathways. There are also training opportunities such as taser and response driving qualifications to help you build your skillset.

Family-friendly working - We understand that balancing a policing career with home life can be challenging. That’s why we’ve worked hard to create progressive policies that support employees through all stages of life. Part-time opportunities and flexible working are supported from the outset.

Excellent training and induction - Our dedicated Learning and Development team will ensure you receive a comprehensive induction and support when you join. If you feel you need additional guidance or development, we’re here to provide it.

Who We’re Looking For

We want committed, motivated officers from all backgrounds and experience levels to join us. If you’re currently serving in another force or have left policing and are looking to return within five years, we encourage you to apply.

We are looking for people who demonstrate high levels of integrity, professionalism, and alignment with our core values: Respect, Integrity, Empathy, Courage and Accountability.

You may also want to take advantage of our ‘On Patrol’ scheme, where you can shadow an officer to get a feel for the role. Alternatively, I can arrange an informal chat with a local officer to help you understand what it’s like to work with BTP.
