BTP Re-joiner

Return to Policing with BTP

If you’ve stepped away from policing or continued your policing journey with another force your skills, experience, and dedication to public service remain incredibly valuable. At the British Transport Police (BTP), we’d be delighted to welcome you back through our Returner Pathway for Police Constables.

Why Return to BTP?

At BTP, our mission is simple but vital: to keep the travelling public safe across the nation’s rail network. Every day, our officers help protect millions of passengers and ensure the smooth running of the railway system.

As a returning BTP officer, you bring:

  • Proven operational knowledge
  • Experience of community‑focused policing
  • Insight that strengthens safety and public confidence

Your contribution genuinely makes a difference and we’d love to have you as part of the team again.

Who We’re Looking For

We want to hear from former BTP officers or officers from other forces who can demonstrate:

  • A continued commitment to public service and safety
  • Genuine motivation for returning to BTP
  • Dedication to ongoing learning and professional development

If this sounds like you, we encourage you to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

You may be eligible to return as a Police Constable if:

  • There is a vacancy at your preferred posting location (our recruitment team will check availability).
  • You left BTP within the last 12 months, or within 5 years if you have continuous police service.

You must not:

  • Have been on any UPP (Unsatisfactory Performance Procedure) stage when you left BTP
  • Have been on Stage 2 for sickness upon leaving
  • Have any live investigations, complaints, performance issues or misconduct warnings (including from other forces)
  • Have any active CCJs, unmanaged IVAs, or bankruptcy
  • Have been dismissed from another force
  • Have retired from BTP

Further internal checks will be carried out by divisional HR, and final approval will be required from your Divisional Commander.

Training Requirements

Returning within 12 months of leaving BTP

You can re-join your division directly and complete any required mandatory training and attestation locally.

Returning after 12 months or transferring from another force

You’ll attend a 4‑week T&R induction course in London before moving to your division.
