Recruiting for the future

03/09/2024

From a young age, I dreamed of working in policing, aspiring to become a police officer. But life does its thing, leading me to a career in recruitment — a role that fulfilled my wanting to work with people in a fast paced environment. After three years in recruitment, I received a call about a 12-month position at BTP. At the time, I was a resourcing advisor in the private sector full time and permanent, but hearing the word 'police' sparked my curiosity. I hadn’t heard of BTP before, and I've since learned many others haven't either, often assuming it's part of the Home Office. After interviewing, I received an offer I couldn't say no to. At 21, with a mortgage, accepting a 12-month role was risky, but I had the best gut instinct, and here I am, 12 years later.

I hugely respect every force in the country for doing what they do, but BTP's unique qualities make it truly special. Its geographical diversity means I have friends and colleagues nationwide, and we police events all over and are involved in pretty much everything, which is quite exciting. Our teams work in the rail environment, requiring specialist skills to manage high-risk incidents and I will never stop having the utmost admiration for that they do. This, combined with our smaller size, creates a culture unmatched by any other force - a family where everyone is dedicated, hardworking, and most importantly looks out for one another. Leading the team that recruits for this incredible place is the privilege of a lifetime.

Twelve years is a testament in itself, but I can honestly say I've felt supported and championed through every career move and life event. As a recruitment advisor back in 2012, I always knew I wanted to lead in recruitment. After six roles and welcoming two children (now 5 and 6), I jumped at the chance to lead all recruitment and promotions activity without a hesitation.

I’ve been the Resourcing Manager for a little over two years now, and it’s been the most rewarding career challenge yet. I work with the most exceptional team of officers and staff whose passion and principles have driven tremendous achievements. They are truly the best people to entrust with recruiting our future colleagues.

So my final thoughts; it's an incredibly special place to work, with the best people who will champion you to progress and develop. As a collective we are aspiring to be better and better every day, and if you get the opportunity to work here then I would 100% would with a doubt.
