Positive action

Empowering each other to go far

We’re passionate about representing the communities we serve and firmly believe that embracing different perspectives makes us stronger.

What is positive action?
Positive action refers to the steps we take to support people from under-represented backgrounds to become and thrive as Police Officers, PCSOs, and Specials. This might include workshops to challenge common misconceptions about policing or offering mentors to help build confidence among new recruits.

We’ve made real progress in building a more inclusive workforce. We’re proud to have the second highest proportion of ethnic minority officers in the country. But for us, this goes beyond numbers. It’s about creating lasting change, and we know there’s always more to do.

Why are we taking positive action?
Because diversity matters. It helps us build stronger relationships with communities who may have felt disconnected from policing. It’s also vital for building public trust and confidence.

We work to challenge myths about policing and give potential candidates a clear, honest view of what to expect both in the role and throughout the recruitment process so they feel informed and confident to apply. If someone does drop out of the process, we may follow up to understand why and, where appropriate, offer constructive feedback to support a future application.

Opportunities are for everyone
No matter your background, everyone who applies is assessed against the same rigorous standards. Every application, test and interview is scored fairly and individually based on merit.

Positive action is about inclusion, not exclusion. We’re committed to creating a diverse, welcoming and forward-thinking workplace where everyone can bring their best selves to work. When we reflect the people we serve, we protect and support them more effectively.
